John's Train Page
My HO trains are Marklin Digital following the Era IV-V of the Swiss Federal Railway (SSB).
These images were taken using a digital camera, then edited with Adobe Photoshop to hide the
background. The main layout is 4' x 8' with a 3' x 4' extension for Bonn Station. All turnouts
are remotely activated and digitally controlled as are the locomotives.
The scenery was done using the classical HO method:
- Paint the plywood brown or some other dirt color.
- Sprinkle on textured grass, dirt, brush, etc.
- Wet it down with a 1:4 mixture of water to white glue with a drop of dish detergent.
- Touch up as needed.
- The roads are thick black paper, painted then Dullcoated. They are applied with rubber cement.
- The building are kits. Bricks mortar was done using spackle.
- Weathering was done using brown paint for rust, and a black wash for soot. The wash is
a drop of flat black enamel to 20 drops paint thinner. Dullcoat was sprayed on top.
